INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
Robotics: A New Science

Wednesday FEBRUARY 20st, 2008
Via della Lungara 10 – ROME - ITALY

http://www.scuoladirobotica.it/lincei/

OBJECTIVES
Recent scientific and technological developments in fields of computing, telecommunication, software, and electronic devices have deeply affected the path of robotics. The impact of the Internet application and of the web-based technologies have given a boost to the development of the so called ubiquitous robots. It is only a matter of time - actually about 20 years, maybe less - before a “robot in every home” became common as a car in every garage. In turn, robotics researches are promoting important scientific, technological, and philosophical breakthroughs.
One major breakthrough pertains to the challenge of developing an autonomous, intelligent machine endowed with behaviors capacities and performance abilities similar, if not superior, to human’s. The second factor of novelty is the result of the interdisciplinarity quality of robotics, a science which – perhaps, for the first time – attracts knowledge and abilities from almost every discipline, from Science and Humanities. From this specificity comes out the need to rethink the development’ stream of the scientific paradigm of robotics; and to review the potentialities with which this new science is endowed to trigger a common development process of Science and Humanities
The conference is not conceived as technical workshop, but as seminar whose aim is to discuss the current robotics development in the frame of the general history of machines, of Automation and Control, of Wiener’s Cybernetics, and of the Artificial Intelligence.
